APOLLO 17 - Volume 11

Robert Godwin  (Book & DVD)

This next volume in the acclaimed NASA Mission Reports series is packed full of never before seen materials. This book include the NASA Mission Reports for Apollo 17 as well as the NASA press releases from 1972 relating to the flight. The DVD in the back contains an exclusive video interview with Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man to set foot on the moon. Apollo 17 was the first time that a scientist was a member of the crew. Geologist/Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt stepped onto the Lunar surface along with Commander Eugene Cernan on the edge of the Sea of Serenity. Apollo 17 was the longest of the Apollo missions, it was also the heaviest payload and the longest Lunar stay. The lunar rover carried to the moon allowed the astronauts to travel further fro their landing point than they ever had before. Also as part of this mission, the moon was photographed from orbit in unprecedented detail.

CANADIANS IN SPACE - The Forever Frontier

John Melady & Henry Champ

On 5 October 1984, Marc Garneau became Canada’s first astronaut when he rocketed into space from a launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida.  In doing so, Garneau became a national hero.  Seven of his fellow citizens followed in his footsteps, many more than once.  Julie Payett, a young mother and adventurer from Montreal was the first Canadian woman to visit the International Space Station.  Chris Hadfield, a former fighter pilot from Ontario, was the first Canadian to do a spacewalk, while Saskatchewan-born Doctor Dave Williams performed a surgery on test animals while his shuttle sped around the globe. This book was written as a 25th anniversary tribute to these brave men and women who defied tremendous adds, risked their lives and soared from earth on sheets of flame. By leaving the only planet known to be habitable, they became true explorers in an ever-expanding universe we will never completely know.

ESCAPING THE BONDS OF EARTH          The Fifties and the Sixties

Ben Evans

To commemorate the momentous 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s pioneering journey into space, on 12th April 2011 a series of five books (to be published annually) will explore this half century, decade by decade, to discover how humanity’s knowledge of flying, working and living in space has changed. Each volume will focus not only upon the individual missions within ‘its’ decade, but also upon the key challenges facing human space exploration at specific points within those 50 years; from the simple problems of breathing and eating in space to the challenges of venturing outside in a pressurised spacesuit and locomotion on the Moon.

The first volume of this series will focus upon the 1960’s, exploring each mission from April 1961 to April 1971 in depth; from the pioneering Vostok flights to the establishment of the first Salyut space station and from Alan Shepard’s modest sub-orbital ‘hop’ into space to his triumphant arrival at the Moon’s Fra Mauro foothills  almost a decade later.

MARTIAN OUTPOST                                    The Challenges of Establishing a Human Settlement on Mars

Erik Seedhouse

Martian Outpost details how humans will get to the Red Planet, including crew preparation, mission trajectories and long-term mission architecture. The interplanetary options for teaching Mars are reviewed, including major propulsive maneuvers and energy requirements for manned and unmanned payloads.  The daunting medical problems, such as radiation and muscle deconditioning, and available countermeasures for humans embarking on a mission to Mars are discussed. Crew selection will be considered, bearing in mind the strong possibility that they may not be able to return to Earth.  Still another chapter describes the guidance, navigation and control system architecture, as well as the lander design requirements and crew tasks and responsibilities required to touch down on the Red Planet.  The book concludes with a look at the surface mission architectures.  The author explains an adaptable and mobile exploration architecture that will enable long-term human exploration of Mars.

PAVING THE WAY FOR APOLLO 11

David M. Harland

This book explains the lure of the Moon to - in turn - classical philosophers, astronomers and geologists, and how NASA set out to investigate the Moon in preparation for a manned lunar landing mission.  It focuses particularly on the Lunar Orbiter and Surveyor missions. This continues Harlands coverage of the Apollo missions and is part of a series detailing the NASA moon programme of the 1960’s and early 70’s. The Apollo missions are among the most important voyages of exploration every undertaken. Fascination remains high yet despite near 40 years of literature on the topic, there are no published resources accessible to enthusiasts who wish to know and understand what transpired during the missions at a detailed level.  Written as a comprehensive series, these books including those planned covering Apollo 12 through Apollo 17, will fill this important gap providing an invaluable and entertaining resource of the Apollo missions.  Each book features colour sections displaying high resolutions scans from NASA original Hasselblad film and brings to live the stories of slight plans, mission reports and flight transcripts.  A must for any space enthusiasts library.
