Though selected as pilot or mission specialist candidates, this is the first group since 1978 who will not train for flights on the space shuttle. The shuttle is scheduled to be retired in 2010 as this group complete their Ascan training for flights to the International Space Station via Russian Soyuz spacecraft or, eventually, spacecraft under the Constellation Program.
