The Fourteen, these astronauts were selected to crew missions in the Gemini and Apollo programmes. Freeman and Williams were killed in aircraft accidents, prior to making a spaceflight, Chaffee was killed in the Apollo 1 pad fire but the others participated in pioneering missions between 1966 and 1973. Of the group, Aldrin, Bean, Cernan and Scott walked on the moon. Bean also commanded the second Skylab space station mission whilst Collins, Gordon and Anders orbited the moon but did not land
