 This group consisted of seven members from the cancelled USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program (MOL pronounced ‘mole’).  These astronauts had already completed training under the Air Force programme and were assigned immediately to support roles in Apollo, Skylab and Apollo Soyuz. All seven went on to fly Space Shuttle missions between 1981 and 1985.  Bob Crippen was pilot on the first shuttle mission and Dick Truly later became the 8th  NASA Administrator (1989 - 1992).
