This selection was the first to include female and minority candidates under the NASA Astronaut Program. The first shuttle era selection featured fifteen pilots and twenty mission specialist candidates.  The six women became the first females officially selected for American astronaut training. This selection process and training programme would become standard for the subsequent eleven NASA Astronaut selections between 1978 and 2004.
