Retired Air Force pilot and engineer Guion  Bluford holds the distinction of becoming one of the first African Americans chosen by NASA to train as an astronaut and the first African-American to fly in space. Selected in the first group of Shuttle era candidates Bluford completed an impressive career of four shuttle flights over a period of nine years during a fifteen year career with NASA. He flew twice on Challenger (OV-099) and twice on Discovery (OV-103), completing the programme’s first night launch and landing (STS-8), a German Spacelab mission (STS-61A), and two military missions (STS-39 and STS-53).
