Group 1 (1959)
Scott Carpenter became the first person to live and work in both outer and inner space, as a NASA astronaut and US Navy aquanaut. A member of the original NASA Astronaut selection in 1959, he made the second American orbital spaceflight in 1962 and three years later, while on leave of absence from NASA, he spent 30 days on the ocean bed as part of the USN ‘Man-in-the-Sea’ programme, Sealab II.
