Jack Lousma completed two pioneering spaceflights in Earth orbit and was a potential candidate for an Apollo flight to the Moon. In 1982 he commanded the 8-day flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia during its third flight, STS-3. Nine years earlier, during the Skylab space station programme in 1973, he served as the Pilot on the record breaking 59-day second manned mission, Skylab 3.
