Russian Cosmonaut
1970 Group (Fifth Air Force Selection)
Yuri Romanenko set a new world endurance record for one mission, spending over 326 days in space on the new Mir space station during most of 1987. A decade earlier, he commanded the first successful residency mission to Salyut 6 which also set a new endurance record. In addition to his two long space flights, both of which included periods of EVA, Romanenko commanded a short international visiting mission to Salyut 6 and during his career worked with fellow space explorers from America, Bulgaria, Romania and Syria. He also became one of the first Cosmonauts to surpass 12 months accumulated time spent in space.
