Rusty Schweickart flew only one mission into space, but it was one of the most important missions in the qualification of hardware and procedures for the Apollo lunar landing programme. Apollo 9 qualified the Lunar Module for manned operations in space, and Schweickart was instrumental in the certification of the Apollo EVA suit to be used on the surface of the Moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts four months later. He was also key member of the Skylab rescue team that evaluated procedures and hardware to save the space station, but never got the chance to return to space himself.
