Sharman, Helen
British Cosmonaut
Project Juno Selection (1989)
On 18 May 1991 Helen Sharman flew aboard the Soyuz TM-12 launch vehicle into Earth orbit and thus became the first citizen of the United Kingdom to fly into space. She rode into orbit with the members of the ninth resident crew of the Soviet space station Mir, launched in 1986. Two days later Soyuz TM12 docked with Mir and Sharman spent a week aboard the station completing a range of experiments under the Project Juno programme before returning to Earth with the two Mir- EO8 crew.
