On 16 June 1963, Valentina Tereshkova was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome  aboard the Russian spacecraft Vostok 6 becoming the first woman in space. Her only spaceflight flight lasted 70 hours and 50 minutes, but sealed her place in the history books. There would not be another female spaceflight for 19 years.
