During a seventeen year career as a NASA Mission Specialist astronaut Don Thomas flew on four shuttle missions, three of which were largely scientific missions operated from the Spacelab long module facility located in the payload bay of the orbiter. His other flight was to feature the deployment of the final Tracking and Data Relay Satellite. Unable to continue training for a planned long duration flight on ISS he became NASA’s ISS Program Scientist for his final four years at NASA.
