Education:

1999: BSc degree in Space Sciences (First Class Honours) from the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario.

 

2000: MSc degree in Physics from the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario. His research focused on Wide Field of View Satellite Tracking.

 

2008: Royal Military College Division of Continuing Studies (Apr 2008).

Career Highlights:

Attended high school in Ingersoll, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.

 

1988-93: (1988) At the age of 12, he joined the 614 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, London, Ontario; (1992) at the age of 16 he was awarded his Air Cadet glider pilot wings in Trenton, Ontario; (1993) earned his private pilot's license at the age of 17 in Cornwall, Ontario, which helped in his selection to the Royal Military College.

 

1994-99: Completed Officer Training Course, Canadian Armed Forces, completing basic training in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Began a degree course at the Royal Military College, Saint-Jean, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada; (1999) graduated with BSc degree in Space Sciences (with 1st Class honours) from the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario; (1999) Top Air Force Graduate from the Royal Military College of Canada.

 

1999-2003: Canadian Armed Forces pilot training; (2001) Outstanding Graduate, Basic Flying Course; (May 2002) awarded Canadian Air Force Pilot Wings.

 

2003-04: Completed F-18 fighter pilot training at 410 Tactical Fighter Operational Training Squadron.

 

2004-06: Served as CF-18 fighter pilot with the 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron, Canadian Armed Forces.

 

2006-07: CF-18 fighter pilot with the 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron, where he led tactical formations and served as Maintenance Test Pilot.

 

2007-09: Prior to selection as a Canadian astronaut he was serving as Combat Operations Officer, 4 Wing Operations, Cold Lake, Alberta, with responsibilities that included the effectiveness of NORAD Air Defence Operations, the operational capabilities for Deployed Exercises, Forward Operating Locations (bases) and Arctic Flying Operations and assets. his experiences during active service also included frequent deployments to the United States and Europe.

 

 

CSA ASTRONAUT ASSIGNMENTS

2009:

(May) One of two recruits selected through the 3rd Canadian Astronaut Recruitment Campaign; (Aug) joined as one of NASA's Group 20 Ascans ("The Chumps"), 9 US and 5 international (2 Canadian, 3 Japanese), for a two-year training and evaluation programme; Ascan training.

2010:

Ascan training.

2011:

Ascan training; (4 Nov) graduated from the NASA Ascan training course; (  ) assigned to the Astronaut Office (Code CB) Training and Capcom Branches in MCC-Houston; (2011-13) concurrent assignment as a Crew Support Astronaut for ISS Expedition 34/35; (20-26 Oct) Capcom NEEMO-15.

2012:

CB training and ISS Capcom duties; Crew Support ISS EO-34/35; his CB responsibilities also focused on establishing a new training programme simulating a week on the ISS, to strengthen the skills of upcoming ISS Expedition crews.

2013:

CB training and ISS Capcom duties; Crew Support EO-34/35 (until May); (Nov-May 2014) Lead Capcom ISS Expedition 39; (21-27 Sep) Cavenaut ESA CAVES 2013, Sardinia, Italy, living underground for six days; resumed Lead Capcom EO-39 role.

2014:

CB training and ISS Capcom duties; Lead Capcom EO-39 (until May); (May) robotics training session, CSA Headquarters; (8-14 Sep) Aquanaut NEEMO-19, seven-day underwater simulated deep-space exploration, Aquarius Habitat, off Key Largo, Florida.

2015:

(6-17 Jul) Geology field trip to Victoria Island, Arctic, to investigate the Tunnunik meteorite impact structure.

2016:

(25 Mar) Capcom on console (EO-47) when Orbital ATK's Cygnus cargo vessel was captured and berthed using Canadarm2.

2017:

(Aug-Jan 2020) First Canadian to lead a NASA Ascan Class (Group 22 "The Turtles").

2018:

Group 22 Ascan Lead.

2019:

Group 22 Ascan Lead.

2020:

Group 22 Ascan Lead (through Jan).

2023:

(3 Apr) Named as Mission Specialist, Orion "Artemis II"; Artemis II training.

2024:

Artemis II training.

2025:

Artemis II training.

2026:

Artemis II training; (1-10 Apr) flew as Mission Specialist Artemis II [Orion CM-003 Integrity] lunar fly-by mission, (9 days 1 hr 32 min); (6 Apr) closest approach to the Moon (4,067 miles/6,545 km); set a new maximum distance from Earth by a human crew (252,756 miles/406,771 km (previous record 248,655 miles/400,171 km by Apollo 13 on 14 Apr 1970); Artemis II was the first crewed lunar mission in over 53 years (Apollo 17, Dec 1972); Hansen became the first Canadian to fly to the Moon; (Apr-May) post-mission recovery and debriefing; (May-Aug) post-flight media tour; (6 Jul) announced his retirement from the CSA, effective September 2026.
